How many sessions does laser pigmentation removal actually take?
It's the first question everyone asks, and the one most clinics answer worst: "how many sessions will I need?" You'll hear "it varies" (true, but useless), or a suspiciously confident low number designed to get you booked. Here's the honest version — what actually decides your number, the typical ranges we see, and the red flags that should make you walk out of any clinic.
The uncomfortable truth: nobody can tell you without seeing your skin
Pigmentation isn't one condition. A sun spot, a patch of melasma and a post-acne mark are three different problems that happen to share a colour — and they respond to laser very differently. Any session count quoted before someone has actually assessed your pigment type, depth and skin tone is marketing, not medicine.
"A number quoted before an assessment isn't an estimate. It's a sales tactic."
The four factors that decide your number
- What the pigment is. Discrete sun spots and freckles are the laser's easiest job. Melasma is the hardest — it's hormonally driven and behaves more like a condition to manage than a mark to erase.
- How deep it sits. Surface (epidermal) pigment clears faster; deeper (dermal) pigment takes more sessions of careful work.
- Your skin tone. Deeper skin tones need more conservative settings to treat safely — which can mean more sessions, traded deliberately for lower risk.
- How your skin responds. Two people with identical-looking pigment can clear at different rates. This is why fading is reviewed between sessions and the plan adjusts.
Typical ranges — with all the caveats attached
With those factors in mind, here's roughly what we see with PICO laser at our clinics. Treat these as orientation, not a promise:
- Individual sun spots and freckles: often show significant improvement within 1–3 sessions.
- General sun damage and uneven tone: commonly a course of 2–4 sessions, spaced about a month apart.
- Melasma: honestly different. Improvement typically builds over a longer, gentler course — and because melasma is hormonally driven, it needs a management mindset and sun discipline, not a one-and-done expectation. Anyone promising to "cure" melasma with a laser is not being straight with you.
The laser shatters pigment; your body clears the fragments — and that clearing takes weeks. Cramming sessions closer together doesn't speed up results, it just treats skin that hasn't finished responding. A clinic pushing weekly pigment sessions is optimising its calendar, not your skin.
Why "cheapest per session" usually costs more
Here's the math that matters more than the price tag: an under-powered treatment that needs ten timid sessions costs more — in money and months — than a properly planned course of three. And a bargain session with the wrong device for your pigment type can darken certain pigment, particularly melasma, putting you further behind than when you started. The expensive part of pigmentation removal is rarely the laser. It's the wrong plan.
The red flags, so you can shop safely (even somewhere else)
- A session count quoted over the phone, sight unseen
- "One session and it's gone" promises — true only for some discrete spots, never a blanket guarantee
- No skin-tone assessment before treatment — this is a safety step, not admin
- Weekly session scheduling for pigment work
- Nobody asks about your sun habits or hormonal history — with melasma especially, that conversation is half the treatment
So what should you actually do?
Get assessed before you get sold. A proper consultation looks at your pigment type, depth, skin tone and history, then gives you a written estimate — session count, spacing, total cost — that you can take home and compare anywhere. That assessment is free at our clinics precisely because it's the step that protects you from buying the wrong plan, ours included.
